Legacy NDE Testing Methods

Visual Inspection (VT)

Visual Inspection (VT) serves as the primary and most universal NDE method, providing the critical first assessment that guides all subsequent inspection strategies. As the most accessible and cost-effective screening technique, VT evaluates surface conditions, detects both obvious and subtle irregularities, and determines which secondary NDE methods may be required for deeper material characterization. VT is an indispensable first step in any comprehensive inspection program and is widely applied across industries such as aerospace, manufacturing, oil and gas, and infrastructure maintenance. It is suitable for inspecting a broad range of materials, equipment, and structures, making it a cornerstone of quality assurance and asset integrity management.

Ultrasonic Testing (UT)

Ultrasonic Testing (UT) is a powerful non-destructive testing method used to detect internal flaws and measure material thickness with exceptional precision. Using high-frequency sound waves, UT can identify even the smallest discontinuities in thick materials providing superior penetration depth, accurate flaw sizing, and instant results. it is a safe and radiation-hazards free inspection. it remains one of the most versatile and reliable inspection tools for ensuring the integrity and safety of critical assets across industries such as energy, aerospace, construction, and manufacturing.

Automated Ultrasonic Testing (AUT)

Automated Ultrasonic Testing (AUT) builds on traditional UT technology by integrating advanced automation, digital signal processing, and precise scanning control. It provides high-resolution imaging and rapid coverage of large areas, making it ideal for pipeline weld inspection, pressure vessel examination, and structural integrity assessments. AUT offers superior accuracy in flaw detection, sizing, and mapping, while minimizing human error and improving consistency. As a non-invasive, data-rich inspection method, AUT supports real-time analysis, digital archiving, and reliable integrity management in demanding industrial environments.

Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)

Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) is a highly effective and widely used NDE technique for detecting surface and near-surface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials. By magnetizing the test material and applying magnetic particles, flaws such as cracks, seams, laps, and inclusions can be quickly identified with precision and reliability. MT is cost-effective, versatile, and non-invasive, making it ideal for both quality assurance and in-service inspection applications. It is extensively used across industries to evaluate the integrity of machined parts, castings, forgings, welds, and heat-treated components.

Radiographic Testing (RT)

Radiographic Testing (RT) is a non-invasive inspection method that uses X-rays or gamma rays to detect internal flaws and verify the integrity of components without causing any damage on the component inspected. RT provides a permanent visual record of internal conditions, making it invaluable for detecting cracks, voids, porosity, inclusions, and other volumetric flaws. It is highly effective for evaluating welds, castings, pressure vessels, and pipelines. With the ability to inspect complex assemblies and thick materials, RT remains one of the most trusted NDT techniques across industries such as oil and gas, construction, aerospace, and manufacturing.

Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT)

Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT) is another highly effective method for detecting surface-breaking defects in both ferrous and non-ferrous materials. The process involves applying a visible or fluorescent dye to the material surface, allowing it to seep into any open flaws, and then drawing it out with a developer for visual inspection. PT is ideal for identifying cracks, laps, porosity, and leaks in non-magnetic materials where methods like MT are not suitable. It is widely used in manufacturing, aerospace, power generation, and construction industries due to its versatility, low cost, and ease of application.

Specialized Testing

Ferrite Testing (FT)

FT is a rapid NDE method for measuring ferrite content in stainless steels, which directly affects corrosion resistance, mechanical strength, and crack susceptibility, ensuring critical components meet quality and service requirements. FT uses magnetic induction technology to delivers quick, reliable results without damaging the test material. Key applications of FT include inspecting welds, castings, forgings, overlays, duplex stainless-steel pipes, tanks, and pressure vessels. FT provides a cost-effective and radiation-free solution for maintaining stainless steel integrity across oil and gas, power generation, and manufacturing industries. It also ensures compliance with industry standards such as API 938C, API 582, and NACE MR0175.

Hardness Testing (HT)

Hardness Testing (HT) determines critical material properties such as strength, ductility, wear resistance, and heat treatment quality by measuring the depth or size of an indenter impression on the material surface. Applications of HT include verifying material compliance, assessing weld integrity, conducting failure analysis, and validating heat treatment processes. This method provides essential data for quality assurance across the oil and gas, manufacturing, power generation, and construction sectors. Drofandy's HT technology offers non-destructive evaluation of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, including welds, heat-affected zones, castings, forgings, pressure vessels, structural steel, and machined components. Results are reported in standard Rockwell (HRC), Vickers (HV), or Brinell (HBW) hardness scales, with additional conversion options available.

Positive Material Identification (PMI)

PMI is a fast, non-destructive testing method that verifies the chemical composition and grade of metallic alloys to prevent costly and dangerous material mix-ups. Using portable X-ray fluorescence (XRF) technology, PMI provides rapid, on-site elemental analysis to confirm compliance with specifications and standards. PMI testing supports quality control, maintenance verification, and certification, detecting incorrect alloys and ensuring correct weld filler use. It enhances asset integrity, safety compliance, and safeguard operations from material-related failures. PMI is vital across oil and gas, power generation, aerospace, manufacturing, and chemical processing industries, ensuring that materials, welds, and components meet design and safety requirements.
